Greenstuf vs Earthwool
The key difference between these two popular brands is that Greenstuf is made from polyester and Earthwool is made from glasswool. GreenStuf is 100% itch free, and contains practically no dust, whereas all glasswool insulation contains some dust from the manufacturing process.

Greenstuf Polyester Insulation
GreenStuf® polyester insulation, manufactured by Autex Industries, are pre-cut to fit common timber framed walls, ceilings and mid-floor joist spacings. Greenstuf segments and rolls are designed for the thermal insulation of residential and commercial buildings. They can be used in ceilings, internal and external walls and mid-floor cavities. To ensure Building Code compliance Autex Insulation recommends that architects and building designers consult the relevant New Zealand Standards before specifying thermal insulation products.
Acoustic Performance: GreenStuf Polyester insulation will assist sound reduction by reducing the resonating noise inside the construction cavity. Typical improvement in sound transmission loss through walls with the use of GreenStuff Polyester R2.0 Wall insulation is an increase of 5-6 Rw points. Check out our Autex Greenstuf Sound Solution product here.
Durable – GreenStuf Polyester will not settle or reduce it’s performance over time and is backed by a 50 Year Product Durability Warranty.
Fire Safe – GreenStuf Polyester insulation is non-flammable and meets all the relevant New Zealand fire standards for compliance including downlights.
Safe to touch – Since it’s made from 100% polyester (like a doona) there’s no nasty itching or scratching when you insulate your home. It’s completely safe, pleasant to handle and does not require protective clothing for handling or installing.
Safer indoor air quality – GreenStuf® does not contain any added chemicals such as formaldehyde based binders or fibres that can be breathed into your lungs. This is great if you want to minimise any dust which may gain entrance to the home interior while e.g. changing downlights.
Autex GreenStuf – Discerning Insulation Customers
We are often posed with the question – why would anyone pay more for GreenStuf? Does it do a better job of insulating the house?
The thermal insulating effectiveness of Autex GreenStuf is, like all the glasswool brands, measured by it’s R-Value. An R2.0 GreenStuf will restrict the same amount of temperature transfer as an R2.0 glasswool. After years of selling this increasingly popular product, we find that there are three primary reasons why some customers will opt for GreenStuf and will not hesitate to pay the extra cost of installing insulation for this premium polyester product:
Respiratory health issues
Households who have severe allergy or asthma issues in the home, will often prefer to take any possible steps to minimise any exposure to dust in the home environment. Since GreenStuf doesn’t have contain breathable fibres, that’s a big incentive for some families to purchase this product.
Plans to use ceiling area for storage or other purposes
GreenStuf is a clean and green, pleasant in appearance and totally itch-free. Some customers who have purchased Autex GreenStuf for their ceiling have told us that they intend to use their ceiling/loft area for regular storage, and that they preferred (each time they were to access this area) to be exposed to GreenStuff, rather than one of the glasswool products. In fact in any exposed settings, such as internal exposed garage walls – GreenStuf can be an excellent option.
Negative experience with old-style glasswool
There’s no doubt that many building professionals who worked with insulation in earlier decades have developed a permanent dislike for glasswool, and this is hardly surprising considering some of the nasty products which have been sold and used on the market in the past. They want relief and certainty that they will be installing an insulation nothing like the one they worked with in the old days, and when they purchase Autex polyester insulation, they are guaranteed just that!
Note: While Autex’s insulation products are sometimes referred to as polyester insulation batts or green insulation batts, this is technically not correct. The correct terminology for Autex GreenStuf insulation products is rolls and segments.
